Where does Vitamin D
come from?

Vitamin D is called the "sunshine vitamin", because the body can absorb its daily requirement with 10-15 minutes of sunshine 3 times per week. Since it is a fat-soluble vitamin, it is stored for reasonable periods. However, some locations and climates make it difficult to obtain sufficient amounts of vitamin D because of cloud cover, smog, use of sunscreens, of just the fact that people don't get out into the sunshine during the colder climates. Vitamin D can also come into the body thru some food, such as fortified milk, fatty fish and fish oils, egg yolds, and other fortified foods most commonly including margarine and dry cereals.

Why do we need Vitamin D?

Vitamin D promotes the body's absorption of calcium, and helps maintain adequate levels of calcium and phosphorus. Vitamin D can protect against some forms of cancer as well as osteoporosis.

Vitamin D helps build strong bones and aids in cell growth. It also plays a role in the secretion of insulin in the pancreas, aiding in the regulation of blood sugar.

What happens if we have a Vitamin D deficiency?

A Vitamin D deficiency can result in rickets or other skeletal problems. In addition, since vitamin D plays a role in maintaining levels of calcium and phosphorus, a vitamin D deficiency can manifest itself with the symptoms of those mineral deficiencies.
