Supplements -- nutritional supplements are the body's insurance policy against breakdown

Even if you consider yourself a healthy person, a vitamin supplement and/or mineral supplement is recommended for a number of reasons.

Very rarely does an individual (especially a non-vegetarian) consume a sufficient amount of the fruits and vegetables that contain all of the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of each of the vitamins and minerals necessary for optimum nutrition. For example, a typical adult will sit down to a dinner of steak and potatoes and become "full" before eating a sufficient amount of vitamin-rich vegetables. After a breakfast of coffee and a doughnut, and a fast-food lunch, add up the nutrition value and you'll find your average person is well short of the RDA needed for peak efficiency. A dietary supplement is an insurance policy to prevent a future health problem.

Even if you are vigilant in eating your vegetables, those that are "out of season" might mean one or more essential nutrients is in short supply in your diet during certain times of the year. Again, a supplement is the answer.

Fortunately, it's not necessary to keep track of each vitamin and mineral necessary for a healthy diet, and it's not necessary to purchase a supplement for each one either. There are several quality "one-a-day" supplements that can furnish you with your RDA of the basic nutrients. Establishing a habitual consumption of one of these is a good start.

"One-a-day" vitamin supplements are not enough for optimum nutrition

In addition to the single "one-a-day" supplement, it may be beneficial to seek out individual solutions for specific deficiencies that you've noticed in your diet. You might want extra Vitamin C during the cold season, for example, or you might want an iron supplement if you're chronically fatigued. Consult our site map, or visit our vitamin and mineral pages, for each nutrient to see if you might want to take an additional supplement or two, but be careful, in some cases too much of a good thing is not a good thing. Remember, the body needs micro nutrients only in relatively small quantities.

Of course, popping the pill does not mean you should consider your job in taking care of your body as done, by any stretch of the imagination. The supplement is just that, a way to ensure you have basic nutrients in sufficient supplies for your body to draw upon when needed. Consuming fruits, vegetables, and other healthy foods have other nutritional benefits that a pill cannot provide. For example, fiber is something that a supplement is completely lacking. And let's not forget the pure pleasure in eating that delicious apple, orange, or tomato.
