Sodium facts

Where does sodium come from?

Sodium comes primarily from vegetables, dairy products, processed foods and condiments, fast foods, soups, and water.

Why do we need sodium?

Sodium is a macromineral necessary to regulate your blood pressure and blood volume. without sodium, you would have no blood pressure. Sodium is an electrolyte necessary for maintaining proper water balance and blood pH, and is also needed for stomach, nerve, and muscle function.

What happens if we have a sodium deficiency?

A sodium deficiency may result in dehydration, fatigue, muscle weakness, swollen ankles or legs, heart attack, coma, confusion, seizure, appetite loss, or vomiting.

Fortunately sodium deficiency is not generally a problem in America. However, excess sodium is a problem. Since just about every food contains sodium, and the fact that it is added in abundance to processed foods as a preservative and taste enhancer, most Americans consule an extra 4000-6000 milligrams a day above and beyond the RDA of 3300 or less. Excess sodium in the diet can lead to other problems, most commonly hypertension (high blood pressure).
