Licorice is an herb native to Europe, Asia, and the Mediterranean. Best known as a candy flavoring, licorice has many health benefits. The first recorded use of licorice was by the Egyptians in around 300 B.C..

The most common use for licorice is as a treatment for upper respiratory problems, including coughs, hoarseness, sore throats, bronchitis, and lung congestion. Licorice stimulates the immune system and works as an antioxidant. Taken internally, licorice has been shown to reduce symptoms of eczema.

Licorice, when used as a component of an herbal tea, becomes an effective laxative or diuretic. Licorice is also used to relieve arthritis and rheumatism, regulate low blood sugar, relieve menstrual cramps, and aid in other menstrual or menopausal problems.

Licorice is used to mask the bitter taste of some medicines, it is 50 times sweeter than sugar.

Licorice contains lecithin, magnesium, silicon, thiamine, vitamins B and E. Those with high blood pressure should consult their physician before using licorice as a supplement.
