1) The only hormone whose production goes down with age for both men and women is DHEA.
2) The reduction of DHEA in the body at a time when age-related illnesses are increasing is the reason why DHEA is used as an anti-aging treatment.
3) DHEA works to maintain youthful levels of sex hormones.
4) The production of antioxidant enzymes in the liver is increased by DHEA.
5) Some researchers think that by giving the immune system a boost, DHEA may be effective in the treatment of HIV/AIDS.
6) DHEA is popular among athletes seeking to build or preserve muscle mass.
7) People who take DHEA say the most noticeable effects of it are the improved mood and sense of physical well-being that are associated with DHEA intake.
8) The anti-aging properties of DHEA are thought to work by combating cortisol, a stress hormone that destroys body tissues.
9) Acne can be a side effect of DHEA.
10) DHEA may be effective in the treatment of Alzheimer’s.
One study done on men aged 50-79 showed that an increase in DHEA intake was associated with a death rate from cardiovascular disease that was over 35% lower than in men of the same age who did not take the extra DHEA. Though there is evidence DHEA helps to battle some of the effects of aging, there is still not proof that it results in a longer life span. The researcher who isolated DHEA back in the 60’s, Dr. Emile-Etienne Baulieu, said, “DHEA won’t make people live longer, but it will improve the quality of life over a longer period of time and will postpone some of the unpleasant effects of aging…”
Prior to taking DHEA, it is advisable to check in with your physician so your DHEA level can be tested first. Then, if it is low, additional DHEA may be advised. Side effects come into play only if normal dosage levels of DHEA are greatly exceeded. Pregnant and nursing women, and those with prior adrenal, thyroid, or ovarian tumors, are advised not to take DHEA.
