Chromium

The Insulin Enhancer

Even though our bodies only need small amounts of chromium, modern diets have caused many people to take in too little of it. Along with obesity, sedentary lifestyles, and other factors, chromium is thought to play a role in the recent surge of diabetes throughout the developed world.

TOP TEN FUNCTIONS OF CHROMIUM

1) Chromium manages insulin in addition to many enzymes.

2) When chromium stabilizes blood sugar levels, cholesterol levels are better managed also.

3) Chromium is needed in order to produce energy.

4) Levels of chromium in the body decrease with age.

5) Additional chromium is only absorbed by the body when there is a chromium shortage.

6) Chromium that has been chelated with picolinate has become popular as a supplement sold to burn carbohydrates.

7) Chromium is needed for the synthesis of fats, protein, and carbohydrates.

8) The risk of developing coronary heart disease may be lowered by chromium.

9) A sugar craving could be a sign of chromium deficiency.

10) The risk of arteriosclerosis rises when a deficiency of chromium exists.

In addition to the problems discussed above, a shortage of chromium may cause fatigue and anxiety. Chromium deficiency can also contribute to glucose intolerance and the poor metabolism of amino acids.

With chromium being difficult to absorb and easily eliminated through urine, building up a toxic level of chromium in the body is difficult. Ingesting doses of chromium that far exceed what is needed over a long period of time is associated with dermatitis, damage to the liver and kidneys, and gastrointestinal ulcers.

A negative reaction can also occur if a diabetic takes chromium supplements. The reason is that chromium can cause blood sugar levels to drop.

The recommended amount of chromium per day is 120 micrograms for adults. Good sources of chromium are eggs, brewer’s yeast, whole grains, beef, and molasses.
