Chamomile

A Late Night Tea

Chamomile is a flower that is closely related to the daisy. Perhaps best known as being made into tea, chamomile has become a very popular herb, with the application of chamomile extending far beyond that cup of tea taken late at night to soothe nerves still jittery from the day left behind.

TOP TEN APPLICATIONS OF CHAMOMILE

1) Chamomile is mixed with other herbs and added to hot water to create an aromatic bathing experience.

2) As a featured ingredient in lotions, chamomile is used to sooth and soften abused and abraded skin.

3) Chamomile is used in ointments to treat eczema.

4) With its anti-bacterial capabilities, chamomile is used to help heal infections.

5) Chamomile is used as a dietary supplement to take advantage of its anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic characteristics.

6) Known for its psychological soothing properties, chamomile is used to reduce anxiety and overcome insomnia.

7) Chamomile is also reputed to help quell digestive upsets, inflammation of the bowels, menstrual cramps, and heartburn.

8) Within chamomile is a substance known as apigenin, a substance thought to affect areas of the brain and nervous system.

9) Chamomile is used to combat diaper rash.

10) Those suffering from gingivitis and sore throats have been known to gargle with chamomile in their search for relief.

Chamomile is thought to be a safe herb with no serious side effects or risk of toxicity. A very small percentage of people are allergic to chamomile and consuming large quantities of the herb can lead to nausea. Although not known to be a risk factor for fetuses, pregnant women should consult with their physicians before beginning to take chamomile, or any other member of the herb family.

In addition to chamomile tea and chamomile appearing in lotions and ointments, chamomile supplements come in pill and capsule forms. Some even use chamomile as a tincture.
