Eucalyptus comes mainly from Australia, a tree that can grow as high as almost 500 feet, and is known as the Australian fever tree. The eucalyptus leaves are a favorite food of the koala. Oil extracted from the leaves of the eucalyptus tree are used for medicinal purposes.
When brewed in a tea, eucalyptus is a good decongestant, effective for coughs, colds, and bronchitis. It has a unique penetrating odor, and is a frequent component of the major decongestants, cough drops and chest rubs.
Eucalpytus oil is also a good antiseptic, often gargled or applied externally to wounds. It has the ability to kill bacteria and viruses. It is also used as a treatment for muscle soreness, since it has the ability to increase blood flow to muscle tissues.
Concentrated eucalyptus oil should not be swallowed, since it is poisonous in larger doses.
