DHEA facts
DHEA, though found in the Mexican wild yam herb, is not an herb, it is the most abundant hormone produced by the adrenal glands in the human body. The body converts DHEA to testosterone in men and to estrogen in women.
Levels of DHEA in the blood decrease with age, production normally peaks in a person's early 20's and declines from there, about 10% every 10 years of age.
DHEA has anti-aging properties because it counteracts the stress hormone, and DHEA supplementation is a way to counteract the aging process. It is normally not recommended as a supplement to those under 40, unless directed by a physician.
Some of the positive effects of DHEA supplements is that it helps reduce body fat in men (not women), increases energy, strengthens the immune system, and helps prevent cancer and heart disease. Low DHEA levels can lead to chronic fatigue, weakness, depression, headaches, and lowered immunity to disease. DHEA has been shown to be an effective treatment for lupus.
DHEA is normally available in tablet form, and also occasionally as a creme that can be applied topically to various parts of the body.
