Where does chromium come from?
Chromium comes primarily from brewer's yeast and other fortified yeast products. As a supplement the typical form of chromium is chromium picolinate.
Why do we need chromium?
Chromium is an essential trace mineral needed by the body for the production of insulin, which is a hormone that stabilizes the body's blood-sugar level. Chromium is thought be be a cholestoral and artheroschlerosis fighter, which increase HDL (good cholosterol) levels while lowering overall cholestorol levels.
Chromium also helps the body build muscle mass and burn fat, it helps control hunger and suppress the appetite, and is often used in weight loss programs and sports supplement nutritional products. In a recent study of overweight women, those taking chromium supplements lost 50% more weight over a 3-month period of time than those taking placebos instead.
What happens if we have an chromium deficiency?
A deficiency of chromium in the body can lead to glucose intolerance and insulin resistance, symptoms of diabetes.
